Chaparral Reorganization - Introducing Small Learning Communities

Ninth Grade Academy

Chaparral High School is committed to creating a successful transition to high school for all incoming ninth grade students.  To this end, we have created a Ninth Grade Academy to service all freshmen students.  Beginning this fall, all ninth grade students will be assigned to a “House” within the Ninth Grade Academy.  A common group of core teachers will share these students throughout each day.  These teachers will be afforded the opportunity to collaborate to create consistent and stable environments for each “House” and build relationships with each student in order to create personalized academic plans for each student.

Themed Academies - Grades 10, 11, 12

At the end of their ninth grade year, each Chaparral student will have the opportunity to select the Themed Learning Community that best suits their talents and interests.  Among their duties, the teachers assigned within each of these communities will take responsibility for curriculum expansion and exposing students to post-secondary opportunities throughout their high school career.  Students will be guided towards the electives within their chosen academy however they may take electives outside of their chosen themed community.

Chaparral High School’s faculty will be reorganized into these Themed Learning Academies during the 2007-2008 school year.  They will be afforded time to create the framework of each Academy to begin recruiting students for the 2008-2009 school year, when every student, teacher, counselor, and administrator at Chaparral will become a member of a Smaller Learning Community.  We will begin to place students in each Themed Academy this fall as part of a pilot program to assist us in creating the most effective educational environment possible.  These students will be selected based on their current choice of electives.
